Embracing curves and imperfections

About Chonky Wonky
Located in Suffolk, Jason and Jon began their artisan company in 2024 when a delivery of large logs was dropped on the doorstep for burning. They quickly realised that it was far too good to go up in smoke. Jason, a professional Chef with over 30 years experience instantly thought chopping boards and Jon with a background of woodworking agreed and so the seed instantly took root.
Why Chonky Wonky? Well, apart from describing them as individuals, we're not even joking. They believe in big and beautiful, allowing the natural curves and embracing the imperfections that nature provides to shape each unique, individual piece of what they like to call, functional art.
Sustainability sits at the centre of everything we make. Every piece of timber is responsibly sourced from trees already marked for felling. Instead of letting this beautiful wood go to waste, we rescue what we can and transform it into practical, handcrafted pieces built to last. We also plan to support long‑term woodland health through a dedicated tree‑planting scheme that helps restore natural balance for future generations.
We work with a wide range of British hardwoods, including Oak, Sweet Chestnut, Lime, Apple, Strawberry Tree, Birch, and Redwood. These timbers inspire our collection of handmade pieces such as chopping boards, charcuterie boards, steak slabs, bowls, doorstops, tables, and the occasional whittled spoon. Each item celebrates the wood’s natural character and showcases its unique grain.
Every piece begins with careful shaping before being left to dry naturally. Any small splits that appear are stabilised with high‑quality epoxy resin to protect the wood’s strength and beauty. Once ready, each item is sanded smooth and treated with premium mineral oil to nourish and preserve the surface.
Because every design is guided by nature, no two pieces are ever the same. Even items made from the same tree develop their own personality, making each one truly unique.
Wood is a natural material, so it will continue to respond to its environment over time. Although we prepare and protect each piece with care, subtle changes may still occur. To help you look after your item and extend its life, we include simple, clear care guidance with every order.
