HOW IT CAME ABOUT…
Embracing curves and imperfections
We love what we do
We believe in big and beautiful, embracing the imperfections that nature provides.
A passion for sustainability
Instead of burning or leaving this beautiful wood to rot away, we create functional art.

We’re slightly Chonky and very Wonky
About Chonky Wonky
Located in Suffolk, Jason and Jon began their artisan company in 2024 when a delivery of large logs was dropped on the doorstep for burning. They quickly realised that it was far too good to go up in smoke. Jason, a professional Chef with over 30 years experience instantly thought chopping boards and Jon with a background of woodworking agreed and so the seed instantly took root.
Why Chonky Wonky? Well, apart from describing them as individuals, we’re not even joking. They believe in big and beautiful, allowing the natural curves and embracing the imperfections that nature provides to shape each unique, individual piece of what they like to call, functional art.
Sustainability sits at the heart of everything we create. Every piece of timber we use is responsibly sourced from trees already marked for felling. Instead of allowing this beautiful wood to be burned or left to decay, we rescue a portion and transform it into practical, handcrafted pieces that can be enjoyed for years. We also plan to support long‑term woodland health through a dedicated tree‑planting scheme, helping restore balance for future generations.
Our workshop works with a diverse range of British hardwoods, including Oak, Sweet Chestnut, Lime, Apple, Strawberry Tree, Birch, and Redwood. These timbers inspire a wide collection of handmade items such as chopping boards, charcuterie boards, steak slabs, bowls, doorstops, tables, and even the occasional whittled spoon. Each piece celebrates the natural character of the wood and showcases its unique grain patterns.
Every item begins with careful shaping before being left to dry naturally. Any small splits that appear during this stage are stabilised with high‑quality epoxy resin to preserve the wood’s strength and beauty. Once ready, each piece is sanded to a smooth finish and treated with premium mineral oil to nourish and protect the surface.
Because every design is guided by nature, no two items are ever identical. Even pieces made from the same tree develop their own personality, making each one truly one‑of‑a‑kind.
Please note that, as with all natural materials, wood continues to respond to its environment over time. Although we work hard to prepare and protect each piece, subtle changes may still occur.
To help you care for your item and extend its life, we include detailed guidance with every order.
